Dr Lara Hierro is a post-doctoral fellow of the NRF Chair in African Diplomacy and Foreign Policy at UJ. She holds a post-graduate diploma in international studies from Rhodes University, an MA in international relations from the University of the Witwatersrand, and a D Litt et Phil in political studies from UJ. Her research areas include EU foreign policy towards Africa (particularly the Joint Africa-EU Strategy), and the Union for the Mediterranean. Her current research focuses on the EU-SA Strategic Partnership.

Dr Westen K Shilaho is post-doctoral research fellow of the NRF Chair in African Diplomacy and Foreign Policy at UJ. He holds a doctorate in politics from the University of the Witwatersrand, where he was a Mellon Scholar. He won Merit Awards at Wits University in 2004, 2006 and 2009-2012, and a UPEACE-IDRC PhD Research Award in 2009. He is also a member of the Wits University Chapter of the Golden Key International Honour Society, and a member of the American Political Science Association.

Dr Shilaho has served as a tutor and lecturer in politics at the University of the Witwatersrand, and a researcher with several civil society organisations in Johannesburg. He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals, and contributed to several edited volumes. He regularly provides expert analyses on conflict, security and diplomacy in Africa for CCTV Africa, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), and Voice of America (VOA). His research focuses on conflict and stability; state formation and transitional justice; and party politics, electoral politics and identity politics in Africa.
